It is with heavy hearts that we announce that District Administrator Emeritus, Michael J. Serino, passed away on June 29 at the age of 87.  Mike served as DA for 22 years, was umpire in chief, section coordinator, state coordinator, and served on the Little League International Board of Directors.  His obituary appears below.  Please keep his children, Michael, Arlene, and Frank, as well as his long time companion, Pearl, in your thoughts and prayers.  His obituary appears below.  May he rest in peace.

 

Michael J. Serino, 87, of Moscow, passed away peacefully Sunday in Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton.

He was the son of the late Frank and Evelyn Pelak Serino, was a graduate of West Scranton High School Class of 1955, and served in the Army Reserves and PA National Guard.

Michael J., as he would often refer to himself, retired from Tobyhanna Army Depot where he not only received numerous awards for dedicated service but also volunteered as “Santa” for the Depot’s Operation Santa Claus. For over 40 years he brought joy and excitement to thousands of Children. Mike was a genuine, kind, caring person who truly had a passion for Little League Baseball which he devoted 65 years of volunteer service.  He began as a coach, insisting that his sons be on different teams for the West Scranton Little League. He was an umpire, local league board member, assistant administrator, umpire in chief, Section and State coordinator, LL International Board member, and for over 22 years, served as District Administrator.  Even after retirement, he would fill in as Tournament Director whenever needed.  As a tribute to his unwavering dedication to service of others, in 2021 he received the NEPA Sports Hall of Fame Service Award.

Mike loved being around family and friends. He was a faithful participant of the Tobyhanna Retired members Breakfast Club where about 36 retirees would go for breakfast every Tuesday. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Michael is survived by his children Michael F. Serino, Flemington, NJ, Arlene Mc Feely, Tinton Falls, NJ and Frank Serino and his wife Jayne, Lenhartsville, PA, his devoted companion Pearl Nuss, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Sarmonis, a sister Marie “Cookie” Serino, and a daughter-in-law Judith Serino.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 10AM in Savino Traditional Funerals & Cremation Care 157 S. Main Avenue in West Scranton. Interment to immediately follow in the Italian Independent Cemetery in West Wyoming.

Friends and family may call Monday from 5PM-8PM.
